Free Concerts and Outdoor Movies in NYC This Summer
Every summer, NYC transforms into a free entertainment paradise. From concerts in Central Park to movies projected on building walls, here is what is happening.
Free Concert Series
- SummerStage (Central Park) — June-September. Major artists perform free shows at Rumsey Playfield. Past acts: Lauryn Hill, Wu-Tang Clan, Erykah Badu. Arrive 2 hours early for good spots.
- Celebrate Brooklyn (Prospect Park) — June-August. Free concerts at the Prospect Park Bandshell. Diverse lineup from jazz to indie rock. Suggested $5 donation.
- River to River Festival (Lower Manhattan) — Free performances along the waterfront. Dance, music, and theater at various outdoor venues.
- Lincoln Center Out of Doors — Free performances on the Lincoln Center plaza. Classical, jazz, world music, and dance.
- Good Morning America Summer Concert Series — Free live performances in Central Park or Times Square. Major pop artists. Arrive by 5 AM for front row.
Free Outdoor Movies
- Bryant Park Movie Nights — Monday evenings June-August. Classic films on a huge screen. Lawn opens at 5 PM, movie starts at sunset. Bring a blanket and picnic.
- Hudson River Park Movies — Friday nights at Pier 63. Family-friendly films with river views.
- Rooftop Films (Brooklyn) — Indie films screened on rooftops across Brooklyn. Some free, some ticketed ($16).
- Movies Under the Stars (NYC Parks) — Free screenings in parks across all five boroughs. Check NYC Parks website for schedule.
Tips
- Bring a blanket, snacks, and a portable charger
- Arrive 1-2 hours early for popular events
- Check weather — most events cancel for rain
